HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 20, 2024) – Another dream of a family who has made some dreams come true around the Tulip City could be a step closer to reality.
During Wednesday night’s 6 PM biweekly business session at Holland City Hall (270 S. River Ave.), City Council members are expected to approve contracts with Integrated Architecture and Lakewood Construction for designing, engineering, and building a new Holland City Recreation Center. The deals are worth nearly $1.2 million in total, plus a construction management fee of over two percent of the overall project cost, as the city received a $5 million gift from James Herringa for creating a central spot for the city’s recreational programs.
Mayor Nathan Bocks explained the need in a promotional video released by the city two and a half years ago.
The initial idea was to build the complex next to the Bouws Pool, off of East 16th Street and Fairbanks Avenue, and city officials are looking to break ground in mid-2026. The Heeringa family has been behind the renovation of the Holland Civic Center Place, as well as facilities on the Hope College campus.
