ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 18, 2024) – Two matters highlight Monday evening’s biweekly Zeeland City Council meeting.
One is about access to the Howard Miller Library for residents of two municipalities. On November 5th, Olive Township voters approved a renewal of a library millage after rejecting a similar request on August 6th, necessitating the expiration of the current contract in September. A new four-year agreement will be before the Zeeland Council on Monday for consideration, then the Olive Township board on Thursday. If both entities approve the contract, full library privileges for township residents resumes on December 1st.
Along those lines, council members will be asked to approve a three-year renewal of the library access contract the city has with neighboring Zeeland Township, as the current agreement expires on December 31st. Under the new deal, the township would pay the city from $185,000 to $215,000 annually through the end of 2027. Township trustees look over this pact tomorrow.
In addition, the governing panel will consider a revised six-month demolition moratorium through this spring to entail only property in residential zones. City planners want to study current regulations in order to address future requests for tearing down homes, as 25 percent of existing dwellings are more than 84 years old, and 72 percent have been up for 44 or more years.
Zeeland City Council members will discuss these and other matters in a 6 PM work-study session ahead of the business meeting, both of which will be in Chambers at Zeeland City Hall (21 S. Elm St.). An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
