HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 14, 2024) – On this week that the spotlight shines on veterans comes news of improvement in one lot of their lives.
The US Department of Veterans Affairs, along with the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Interagency Council on Homelessness, disclosed that veteran homelessness is at its lowest since tracking it started 15 years ago, based on the 2024 Point-in-Time count that showed nearly 33 thousand vets were without permanent residences, a drop of 11.7 percent. In Michigan, the decline was of six percent to 456. Last month, the VA announced it had permanently housed around 48 thousand veterans in Fiscal 2024, and 134 thousand over the past three years.
Local groups such as Community Action House have helped in all this. Jessica Pressley is the non-profit’s Senior Manager of Housing Access.
The 2025 Point-in-Time count of homelessness nationwide, required by HUD, is set for January 27th.
