LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 14, 2024) – Eight days after winning reelection to a third four-year term as Allegan County Clerk and Register of Deeds, Bob Genetski may be getting a new job anyway.
The one-time Republican state legislator from Saugatuck was chosen during a special Wednesday meeting by the Laketown Township Manager Search Committee to enter into contract negotiations for becoming that community’s new operational leader. He was chosen over Bronson City Manager Brandon Mersman by five of the eight panel members, with one against Genetski, and two others absent.
Genetski, Mersman, and Grand Haven Township Assistant Manager/Human Resources Director Karen Sherwood, who withdrew her application before the final decision was made, emerged from five semifinalists and around 40 overall hopefuls to be the finalists for the post that Al Meshkin has held for 35 years. Meshkin announced in July his intentions to retire on January 3rd. Former Holland City Manager Ryan Cotton, now affiliated with retained search firm MGT, helped the committee in the selection process.
The job posting had a salary range of $115,000 to $140,000 annually. The township board unanimously approved entering into contract negotiations with Genetski, who expressed excitement at the prospect of the new employment opportunity. Those contract talks probably won’t begin until the new board is seated on November 20th, with the next scheduled meeting set for December 11th.
If Genetski does take this job, he would be stepping down as the county Clerk/Register of Deeds, a post he has held for the past eight years since serving three two-year terms as a state representative through 2014. By state law, the judges of the 48th Circuit Court in Allegan would then appoint a successor to run until the next General Election on November 4, 2025, when the winner would serve the remaining three years of Genetski’s term.
