OLIVE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 5, 2024) – Charges have been filed more than three months after a fatal incident involving a boat trailer that broke free and struck two pedestrians on Holland’s North Side.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department disclosed on Tuesday that 44-year-old Alejandro Chavez of Holland will face counts of moving violation causing death, failure to stop and identify causing death, moving violation causing serious injury, driving with a suspended license causing serious injury, and failure to stop and identify causing serious injury. A check of current inmates at the Ottawa County Jail failed to turn up Chavez’ name.
The charges stem from a July 21st incident in which a 62-year-old Holland man was killed, and a 38-year-old Holland man was flown to Corewell-Butterworth Hospital. They were walking along a path along Quincy Street near 140th Avenue around 2 PM when a trailer carrying a pontoon boat broke free from the truck towing it and struck the two men, trapping them underneath. Deputies gave few other details about the incident at the time, but the now-disclosed charges indicate that Chavez allegedly drove off after the incident.
