It was a delightful final Saturday in October along the Lakeshore.
Many people filed into Ray & Sue Smith Stadium in Holland or Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo for homecoming football games involving Hope and Western Michigan, respectively. Others were tailgating ahead of the Michigan State at Michigan game in Ann Arbor, or the Ferris State at Grand Valley State contest in Allendale. There was trick-or-treating in downtown Holland, while it was the first day of early voting across most of Michigan.
In the spirit of the campaign season, when promises made by candidates are sometimes kept, a promise made in public this past week was indeed kept. When Ottawa County Parks had its ceremonial ribbon cutting last week at the site of the refurbished Ottawa Sands County Park in Ferrysburg, it was nice, but one got the sense that it would have been better a week later, when the leaves on the trees are in full autumnal color.
To fulfill that on-air pledge, a trip to Ottawa Sands was on the cards for Saturday. A stop first along the Grand River south of the GVSU campus, before taking a walk on the 1.6-mile paved loop around the the Ottawa Sands basin. A final visit to the nearby North Beach State Park (a great alternative to the crowds of Grand Haven or Holland state parks during the summertime) completed the excursion.
