HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 30, 2024) – A Labor Day holiday tradition in Holland since 2006 returns on Monday.
Over 70 vehicles will be setting out from the Miller Knoll parking lot in Zeeland around 9:15 AM, heading west to the Heeringa Holland Civic Center Place parking lot, where there will be a reception, viewing of the big rigs, refreshments and more. Due to the ongoing rebuild of westbound Business 196, the route to downtown Holland will be altered. The vehicles will head west along Washington Avenue/Chicago Drive/Lakewood Boulevard to US-31, and then south to Chicago Drive, before going west into 8th Street and through downtown Holland.
Retired First Ward Councilman Mike Trethewey was a major figure in organizing this annual event that celebrates the area’s manufacturing and retail community before his retirement three years ago.
Meanwhile, more than 30,000 are expected to descend upon the Straits of Mackinac for the 66th annual Mackinac Bridge Walk. There will also be a change there too, as the northern point has been shifted to Bridge View Park in St. Ignace and away from the Mackinac Bridge Authority’s administration building, where James Lake and his staff work.
While some Labor Day traditions continue, another is not, at least for now. Officials of the Saugatuck Public School Community Recreation Department announced this week that the annual Blue Star Labor Day Bridge Walk will not take place on Monday morning, citing challenges in gathering all necessary resources for ensuring safety and enjoyment of participants, while minimizing travel disruptions. They hope to get things together to resume the quarter-century tradition in 2025.
