OLIVE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 13, 2024) – The long-awaited arrival of body cams and dash board cams for the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department is apparently just a vote away.
During the biweekly business meeting on Tuesday morning, the county board is expected to vote on a five-year, $4.6 million contract with Axon Enterprise that would equip each deputy with a body cam, and each cruiser with a dash board cam. It would also replace all current tasers that the department is using.
It’s the culmination of a lengthy process done by Sheriff Steve Kempker and his staff to bring such technology to the department. Kempker signed off on the agreement nearly three weeks ago, according to Undersheriff Eric DeBoer.
The county board is also expected on Tuesday morning to set a September 10th date for a public hearing and a vote on the 2025 county budget, along with a separate five-year contract with On Duty Gear to supply the sheriff’s department with new apparel, accessories and equipment, at a first-year cost of $110,000.
