HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 28, 2024) – There is a new sign greeting motorists coming into Holland this week.
On Tuesday afternoon at 3 PM, a brief ceremony was held at Van Bragt Park, near the southern base of the Unity Bridge that connects Holland’s North Side with downtown Holland, where one of two “HeartSafe Community” road signs was placed to indicate that the Tulip City has been awarded such a designation by the Citizen CPR Foundation.
It’s the culmination of a two-year effort by retired paramedic Steve Stegeman and others to fulfill 13 criteria required for this commendation.
One of the requirements include training 15 percent of the community population annually on what to do when sudden cardiac arrest occurs.
While training in hands-free CPR is desired, awareness of what to do in a crisis situation is paramount.
Stegeman was joined by Angela Lound, FF/EMT with Holland Department of Public Safety Fire Operations, who is the HeartSafe Holland Administrative Chair, in talking about this achievement and the challenges ahead.
The commemoration is ahead of the first week in June being CPR and AED use Awareness Week.
