ALLEGAN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Beginning next week and continuing until Labor Day, the Allegan County Health Department will conduct sampling at select beaches in the county, funded by two Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy grants.
Based on funding received, the health department says it has prioritized testing high-risk beaches in Allegan County. The tests will monitor the level of E. coli in those waters to determine if using the waters for recreational purposes is safe for the public.
The Lake Michigan beaches in Allegan County to be sampled this season are Laketown Township Beach, Oval Beach, and Pier Cove. The inland lakes are Gun Lake Park Beach, Dumont Lake Park Beach, Swan Lake, and Littlejohn Lake Park Beach.
Test results from beaches sampled and beach information in Michigan can be found on the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy BeachGuard website. The Allegan County Health Department says it will issue advisories if a beach sampled has high E. coli levels over the established state health recommendations or if harmful algal blooms are present.
