HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 21, 2024) โ Efforts to improve the environment in Holland have been bolstered by a grant and cited in a certification this week.
The city has joined with the state Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, the Recycling Partnership, and with Prairie Robotics to launch a 12-month pilot program for improving residential recycling. Starting next month, there will be high-tech cameras, global positioning systems, and computers on city recycling trucks to check the contents of curbside recycling bins, making sure that they have only proper recycling materials inside. This surveillance would then help tailor what city officials are calling โconstructive feedbackโ to each individual household. A grant of over $38,000 from EGLE will help launch this program.
Meanwhile, Holland is receiving a gold certification as part of the Michigan Green Communities Challenge for its leadership in areas such as energy efficiency, climate adaptation and resilience, recycling, environmental justice and more. The Tulip City is one of 36 statewide that received such a commendation, along with Grand Haven, while Fennville and Saugatuck Township garnered silver certificates from this program, which is a joint effort with EGLE, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the Michigan Municipal League, and other agencies.
