DEARBORN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 19, 2024) – Speeding on the highway can lead to speeding in the neighborhood.
That’s according to new research conducted for the Automobile Association of America. Adrienne Woodland, with Triple A’s Michigan office in Dearborn, explained in her weekly interview on “WHTC Morning News” last week with guest host Jim McKinney.
Triple-A looked at crash data before and after speed limit increases on interstates in Michigan, Georgia and Oregon, with a focus on roads within a one-mile radius of those highways. As a result of these findings, the foundation is recommending to state and federal transportation leaders three solutions – public awareness campaigns aimed at the riskiest drivers, automated speed enforcement and screening tools, and redesigned local roads with narrower lanes, speed bumps, roadway landscaping and curb extensions.
Previous research by the foundation showed that increased highway speed limits led to more crashes and didn’t drastically improve travel times for motorists.
