HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 6, 2024) – Mother Nature has decided to take the tulips early this year, as most tulip beds are on their last legs. City plantings have about one-third of their blooms left, while Windmill Island has about one-quarter of their blooms left.
“We want to make sure people have accurate expectations when they come to the festival,” Gwen Auwerda, Executive Director of Tulip Time has said. This year, the tulips bloomed particularly early. Initially, Tulip Time believed with cooler weather at night and clear skies, the tulips would last through the festival. Unfortunately, wind and rain, along with warm days over the weekend fell most of the blooms. But Tulip Time continues on regardless.
Auwerda continued, “Festival week is a wonderful collaboration with the City of Holland, attractions, and many volunteers that make this week happen. While many come to see the tulips, the weather caused an early bloom this year. There are many great events the rest of the week that people can take advantage of. For occasions just like this, we started the Tulip Immersion Garden, where we can guarantee tulips every year.”
The Tulip Immersion Garden is a 65,000-tulip display showcasing tulips in raised beds, beautifully arranged and perfectly bloomed. The displays are constructed in a way that tells the story of how the Dutch found the tulip in Turkey, brought it to the Netherlands and cultivated it before it finally made its’ passage to Holland, Michigan as part of the historic festival. The tulips are set in such a way that creating lasting memories and Instagram-perfect photos is easy to do.
All of Tulip Time’s guests can still enjoy the many activities Tulip Time has planned like the world-famous Dutch Dancers, Dutch Dance lessons, Historic Walking Tours, Tall Ship Dockside Tours, the Art in Bloem Fine Art Exhibit, the Tulip Time Quilt Show, and the shows and concerts like FiddleFire, the Holland American Legion Band, The Texas Tenors, and country star Scotty McCreery.
