HOLLAND/ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 12, 2024) – The biggest motoring headache for 2024 along the Lakeshore begins on Saturday.
That’s when contracted crews will roll out barrels and other blocking instruments onto Business 196. Through Thanksgiving, both lanes in each direction of that highway will be rebuilt, a 4.5-mile stretch between US-31 to the west and 88th Avenue to the east.
According to M-DOT’s Grand Rapids office spokesman John Richard says a complete overhaul is coming.
The posted detour for motorists is taking Adams Street, but there are also signs taking traffic along Chicago Drive and Washington Avenue through downtown Zeeland to Fairview Avenue and Main Avenue.
Zeeland Mayor Kevin Klynstra says his community is ready to see more traffic.
For the last five years, M-DOT has focused on rebuilding I-196 from Grandville through Saugatuck.
Last month, crews began rebuilding the junction of Cedar Street, Jenner Drive and Marshall Street in Allegan, where M-89 and M-40 merge, into a roundabout. That work is also slated to go through Thanksgiving.
