HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 11, 2024) – Two major pieces of LG Energy Solution’s plans for expanding its Holland battery manufacturing operations were unanimously approved by the Tulip City’s municipal leadership on Wednesday night.
The City Council gave its endorsement to a 425 Agreement with neighboring Fillmore Township, allowing the city to annex some township acreage in the area of East 48th Street in order for the Korean-based company to expand its current facility by 1.7 million square feet, at a cost of around $2.5 billion, in order to build batteries for Toyota’s electric vehicle fleet. LG would pay infrastructure costs incurred in the expansion effort, and while no new jobs would be created, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, according to Mayor Nathan Bocks.
Holland BPW General Dave Koster also assured Bocks and other council members that the expansion wouldn’t unduly tax the city’s energy needs, with a $49 million-plus project for substation and other improvements handling the increased demand.
LG Energy Solutions is looking to begin supplying batteries to Toyota sometime next year.
