SPRING LAKE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Mar. 30, 2024) – There were some anxious moments on Saturday evening due to a fire at an automotive parts supplier near Fruitport.
The Ottawa County Department of Emergency Management issued an Immediate Evacuation alert around 5 PM for a half-mile radius around the Linamar Manufacturing (formerly Mobex Global) complex off of Apple Drive. Authorities feared that the blaze there could have led to an explosion, and residents in that vicinity were asked to head to a church in Spring Lake as a precaution. The alert was sent out countywide, but emergency management officials said shortly afterwards that the message went to a larger group of people than expected.
At 6:15 PM, Emergency Management Director Lou Hunt issued the following statement: “Proactive measures on (the) scene have stabilized the situation. The request for evacuation in the area has been terminated. Per fire (fighters) on (the) scene, no evacuation is needed at this time and residents can return to their homes.”
Details as to the circumstances that led to the blaze, whether there were any reports of injuries, and any damage estimates were not immediately disclosed.
