UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 2, 2024) – The election year fever is already here, as candidates for local positions are declaring their intentions.
On Thursday, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Eric DeBoer, who was just tabbed last week to replace the retiring Valerie Weiss as Undersheriff, announced that he will be seeking the Republican nomination for Sheriff in the August 6th Primary Election. DeBoer, a 25-year veteran of the department who has risen from the ranks of a reserve deputy to being head of the Sheriff’s Road Patrol, looks to replace Steve Kempker, who is retiring after two four-year terms as sheriff.
Last month, among others: local private attorney Derek Dalman announced his candidacy for the 20th Circuit Court Probate Judgeship that Mark Feyen will not be seeking reelection for; all five incumbent Allegan County Commissioners – Scott Beltman, Mark DeYoung, Gale Dugan, Dean Kapenga and Jim Storey – announced their intentions to run for reelection; and Alice Bernal, Jonathan Blair and Elizabeth Peterson are seeking to fill a new judgeship in Allegan County’s 48th Circuit Court. This does not include the special May 7 recall election for Ottawa County’s District 2 Commission seat, as incumbent Lucy Ebel will be challenged by Christian Kleinjans.
The filing deadline for the August primary is April 23rd.
