OLIVE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 17, 2024) – Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Kempker is losing his top aide.
On Wednesday, his department announced the impending retirement of Undersheriff Valerie Weiss after three decades in law enforcement. She rose from the ranks of patrol deputy in 1995 to become the second in command in 2017, being appointed to replace Kempker when he won election as Sheriff.
“Undersheriff Weiss was instrumental in many major changes in programming in the community and within our agency. She has always had a passion for community policing and how we can make a difference in the communities we serve, with a focus on victims of crime. She also enjoyed being a part of programs in our correctional facility to provide resources for our citizens.” – Steve Kempker
The department statement said that, after she leaves her position on February 28th, Weiss plans on spending time with her family, “before staring a new career to be able to still serve for the community.” There was no immediate mention as to a timetable for appointing a new Undersheriff.
