GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 3, 2023) – A 37-year-old Holland man will be sentenced to no more than a year behind bars after pleading guilty on Tuesday to involuntary manslaughter charges stemming from the death of a 41-year-old woman at a North Side residence this summer.
Anthony Meyer agreed to the plea deal with prosecutors after he was charged following the July 3rd incident outside of a home in the 160th Avenue-Perry Street vicinity. That was where a homemade cannon brought to the scene by the accused was lit and exploded, sending shrapnel into a crowd. A piece of that shrapnel pierced the chest of Jana Daniels, who was killed as a result, with nine other persons hospitalized, and there was some substantial damage to vehicles and buildings in the area.
In documents filed with the 20th Circuit Court, Meyer admitted he had been drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana before lighting what is commonly known as a “salute cannon.” He also admitted to packing the explosive with smokeless powder, which created far greater pressure and led to the release of the shrapnel.
Meyer, who is free on $25,000 bond, will be sentenced on February 5th.
