KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Western Michigan University’s student Cold Case Program murder investigation team has announced it is not only getting a financial boost, but a real chance to be part of a crime fighting organization.
The four-year old program is being taken under the wing of the Michigan State Police, not only helping them with unsolved killings, but with additional duties.
Detective Lt. Chuck Christensen announced Friday that the students will join the team as cadets or student assistants, which will be part-time paid positions with the State Police.
He says they have already helped solve three cold case murders in Three Rivers, Michigan, Berrien County, Michigan, and one in South Carolina.
Program Director Ashlyn Kuersten calls it her ”Scooby Doo Team,” and says this will give students real on-the-job experiences and law enforcement contacts, while also bringing families closure if the case is solved.
WMU student Jacqueline Chavarria says it will allow them more opportunities to help solve cold cases, helping them to “define and change our careers.”
Michigan State Police officials say it is also a good recruitment opportunity for their organization, as they also struggle to attract enough young people for thei job openings.
