LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 2, 2023) – A Lakeshore community has had a number of events and activities as autumn begins in earnest.
Last Thursday, volunteers from Perrigo made the trek northwest from Allegan to help spruce up Laketown Township parks as part of the annual Day of Caring, sponsored by the United Way of Ottawa and Allegan Counties. Crews helped paint the old Township Hall and spread wood chips along the main trail at Farview Park.
On September 23rd, Graafschap Fire Department members were joined by volunteers from Third Coast Community Church in distributing free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to units at the Shangrai-La Mobile Home Community and the Country Acres Mobile Home Park. A grant from the state Fire Marshal’s office helped pay for the 135 smoke detectors and 27 carbon monoxide detectors that were handed out.
Earlier last month, results of surveys mailed out to about three thousand residents in Laketown Township on that entity’s parks system were announced. More than 200 of those queries were returned either physically or virtually, over double that of the last such canvassing done in 2016. This 10-question survey indicated that bike paths were the most visited, while removing invasive species was the most important issue that needed addressing. The survey will help the parks commission in planning and projects, along with securing state grant money.
Finally, the Land Conservancy of West Michigan approved a plan to turn the Huyser House off of 64th Street into a Legacy Living Center. The Laketown Township Building Authority had endorsed a 34-page plan that would restore the 85-year-old structure, turning it into a facility that would not only spotlight the area’s agricultural past, but also as a staging/classroom site for nature tours. It would take between $100,000 and $125,000 to pay for needed repairs and updates, and the plan was needed to prevent a recommended demolition of the house. The township board may take up the matter at its next meeting on October 11th at 6 PM at the Township Hall (4338 Beeline Rd.).
