LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer Wednesday outlining her plans for the rest of 2023 in a wide ranging “What’s Next” speech in Lansing.
Whitmer says she wants Michigan to have guaranteed paid family medical leave across the state. Michigan law currently requires large businesses to offer short-term paid sick leave. Whitmer claims the move would attract new residents to the state.
She did not provide any details on how her proposals will be paid for.
She also is pushing a plan to move Michigan to “100-percent clean energy”.
House Republican Leader Matt Hall of Kalamazoo County reacted to the speech, saying the agenda laid out by the Governor “will only increase the cost of living” for Michigan residents.
Senator Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt of Van Buren County said the proposals are bad news for Michigan families.
“On the heels of the highest inflation experienced in four decades, Gov. Whitmer is still fighting to increase income taxes on hardworking families and impose new tax burdens on small businesses and charitable nonprofits. Instead of supporting proven policies put in place to lower taxes, reduce oppressive regulations, invest in infrastructure, and provide access to reliable and affordable energy, the governor is doubling down on radical policies that will do the opposite, crippling economic growth and super-charging inflation.”
