HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 14, 2023) – For the second time this month, an attempt to swim across Lake Michigan from Wisconsin to Michigan has failed.
On Saturday, Bryan Huffman’s effort to duplicate the feat accomplished by Jim Dreyer 25 years ago, to swim 50 miles from Mantiwoc to Ludington, was halted after about 12 miles and 13 hours in the water. The support boat sustained a broken hydraulic line that took about an hour to repair, but by that time, the 50-year-old Holland man had to be pulled from the waters because of hypothermia and a driving current that forced him to drift backwards a couple of miles, due to treading water while the vessel was being worked on.
Although the crossing attempt was unsuccessful, Huffman was able to raise over $20,000 for the Holland Aquatic Center Foundation, and he vowed to continue his marathon swimming fundraising efforts.
On August 1st, Dreyer’s 82.5-mile endeavor from Milwaukee to Grand Haven was aborted after about 10 miles due to inclement weather.
