COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A one time inmate at the Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater and his mother have been charged with an alleged drug smuggling incident.
Michigan State Police say they and the Michigan Department of Corrections have been investigating the alleged incident that took place during a visit on November 29, 2022 when 34-year-old prisoner Brandon Eugene Haggart had a scheduled visit with his 65-year-old mother Cheryl Louise Haggart of Rosebush, Michigan along with an adult female friend.
During the visit, the mother allegedly handed her son a KN95 face mask that contained strips of suboxone.
Once the visit was concluded, Brandon Haggart was searched by corrections officers and found to have the suboxone in his possession.
Security video at the prison showed the “hand off”, but Cheryl Haggart and the female friend had already left the prison.
Brandon Haggart was subsequently arrested and charged for his part in this incident. His case is currently going through the Branch County courts.
According to the Michigan Department of Corrections, he is now serving his sentence of 86 months to 15 years in the Carson City Correctional Facility after entering no contest pleas to a pair of second degree criminal sexual conduct charges.
His mother was arrested on a warrant by the State Police Third District Fugitive Team on August 1, 2023 and arraigned two days later in Branch County District Court.
Cheryl Haggart is facing felony charges of furnishing contraband to a prisoner and bringing contraband into a prison.
Bond was set at $10,000. A probable cause hearing was set for this Thursday with a preliminary exam scheduled for August 17.
