PENTWATER, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 7, 2023) – The work up the Lake Michigan shore to dredge harbors continues.
Holland-based King Company, a long-time contractor for the US Army Corps of Engineers, began on Friday to remove over 59,000 cubic yards of material from the navigation channel in Pentwater, from the pierheads upstream to Pentwater Lake. That material will be moved between 800 and 3,300 feet north of the north pier at a cost of over $440,000.
King Company started its annual efforts in May by clearing out the St. Joseph Harbor, followed by South Haven, Saugatuck, Holland and Grand Haven. The Grand Haven dredging last month was halted for a time when the waters of Lake Michigan off of North Beach tested positive for elevated levels of E. coli, possibly coming from tainted rainwater in the Grand Haven harbor being moved to the Ferrysburg site as part of the dredging operations.
The Pentwater work, which should go through the end of this month, may be the last of the season for King Company, as a Sault Ste. Marie firm is currently working on clearing out the harbor in Ludington.
