HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, July 31, 2023) – It’s a diamond anniversary for WHTC on Monday.
At 6 PM, the 1000-watt AM station will have completed 75 years of continuous broadcast service to the Holland/Zeeland area. While the major headline nationwide on Saturday, July 31, 1948 was the dedication of what would become JFK airport in New York, Holland Broadcasting Company Vice President Williard C. Wichers was the first voice heard over WHTC. Ten years later, he not only recalled what led to that first broadcast, but took a look back at the subsequent decade that passed, and note some of the landmarks that are vintage now but were considered new in 1958.
Dr. John Mulder, President of Western Theological Seminary, was also heard on that first day of broadcasting, as well as in the 10-year anniversary program a decade later.
