HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, July 6, 2023) – Early voting in Holland is coming.
During Wednesday night’s scheduled biweekly business meeting, the Holland City Council was briefed on a pending two-year contract with the Ottawa County Clerk’s office to establish an early voting center in the Tulip City. Such centers, as set forth in a voter-approved state constitutional amendment last November, would be set for a nine-day period ahead of every state and federal election, and a committee of local and county officials determined that three such centers, located strategically throughout the county, would fulfill the constitutional requirements.
Under the deal, all aspects of running the EVC’s will be overseen by the county clerk’s office, although each local jurisdiction will be responsible for some work hours during the nine-day early voting period, and the county would be billed for the costs incurred. It’s a byproduct of what state voters approved last November in Proposal 2, and the growing national trend of expanding the election process, according to County Clerk Justin Roebuck.
Allegan County-based voters in Holland would also be able to access this facility.
Roebuck is hopeful of having this deal with the city finalized by the end of the month, with a state-mandated September 1 deadline for having a county-wide plan submitted to Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s office.
