PARK TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, July 5, 2023) – Authorities on Wednesday identified a 41-year-old Holland woman who had lost her life on Monday night in what they are continuing to call an “accidental death” during a fireworks explosion at a residence on Holland’s North Side.
The Ottawa County Medical Examiner’s Office, after conducting an autopsy on Jana Daniels at Holland Hospital, concluded that she had succumbed to a cardiac laceration due to a piece of shrapnel, and that her death was determined to be accidental. Five of the other nine persons who were hospitalized following the explosion at a residence in the area of 160th Avenue north of Perry Street have been treated for their injuries and released, while the other four are expected to survive. The injuries are described only as being mainly to the extremities and involving soft tissues.
Sheriff’s Detective Captain Jake Sparks added in a department statement, followed by a briefing at the Fillmore Street complex, that the cause of the blast continues to be under investigation.
At lease five vehicles and three homes in the area were damaged by the blast, with some of the shrapnel fragments passing through walls and windows of nearby residences.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department or Ottawa County Silent Observer (877-887-4536).
