UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM, May 3, 2023) – With one exception, voters were in a positive mood at the polls along the Lakeshore on Tuesday.
That exception was in the Grand Haven Area Public Schools district, where electors turned down a $155.7 million bond proposal for renovations and expansions by 52.3% (5514-5039). It would have placed a 1.98-mill levy over 21 years.
A measure did pass by just 73 votes (1614-1541), which was a nearly $41.2 million bond proposal in Hamilton Community Schools, also for renovations and expansions, which will place a 2.6-mill levy over 30 years.
Two proposals before Holland voters were approved. The Holland City Council and the BPW was given the go-ahead to sell the DeYoung Power Plant site off of Pine Avenue, as well as a plot off of Kollen Park Drive – a total of 19.5 acres – by 63.5% (3633-2088), which is above the 60 percent needed for passage. In addition, a five-year, one-mill operational levy renewal for the Holland Aquatic Center cleared by 76.1% (4711-1479).
All other ballot proposals involving Allegan/Ottawa county-based municipalities or schools cleared by margins of between 55 and 77 percent:
Allegan Township Roads Rebuild – 70.1% (366-156)
Allegan Township Roads Resurface – 70.6% (368-153)
