KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Western Michigan University will begin alcohol sales at Waldo Stadium on game days this fall for the first time. The WMU Board approved the request Thursday from Athletic Director Dan Bartholomae, who said students have been requesting it. He feels it’s a way to boost attendance and revenues and that it’s right in line with what other colleges are doing.
Bartholomae assured the board it can all be done safely and that only beer, wine and seltzer will be sold. He went onto say that there will be a two drink limit, and that only staff trained in alcohol sales will be involved along with the presence of extra security.
Board President Shelly Edgerton commented that it may be the most popular thing they did at the meeting.
Trustees asked for a status report after the season, to determine if having alcohol at the games should continue as it so far has only been available to Gill Club members in the Press and sky boxes for some time. Alcohol has been a sensitive subject on campus following two booze-related traffic deaths involving students.
