PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – For the time being, Portage Northern High School will keep its graduation date of May 26 after a judge lifted the temporary injunction ordering the graduation date move.
Senior Minaleah Koffron sued in March, saying May 26 is the Jewish holy day of Shavuot and she would not be able to attend due to her faith.
Judge Curtis Bell called it a difficult decision without a good outcome and added he sympathizes with Koffron and respects her position, but says he also has to consider hundreds of other students making their plans as well.
The federal lawsuit over the date has its first hearing April 20.
