WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKZO AM/FM) — U.S. Representative Bill Huizenga of Michigan’s 4th Congressional District held a telephone town hall on Monday, March 27 to provide an update and answer questions from constituents on issues being discussed in Washington and their possible impact on Southwest Michigan.
During the town hall, Huizenga commented on the Covenant School shooting in Nashville saying that the U.S. has a culture problem and that more needs to be done to combat the country’s mental health crisis.
“The mental health crisis that we are seeing is so significant. It is tragic,” said Huizenga. “We have to put more resources into those, but the balance of protecting our second amendment rights is crucial as well. We cannot give that up in pursuit of something that we all desire, which is less violence.”
The shooting in Nashville comes 10 months after the massacre in Uvalde, Texas, where 19 students and two teachers were killed at Robb Elementary School.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer also commented on the shooting, saying it’s “an uniquely American problem.”
Three 9-year-old children died along with 3 adults in the shooting on Monday.
