ALLEGAN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Allegan County sheriff’s deputies are investigating reports of checks being stolen from mailboxes. But that’s not all.
Deputies say the would-be thieves are also altering the checks, then cashing them out of state.
Authorities say that in all of the incidents, the stolen checks were intended to pay for utilities or services. And the only way victims were to find out that something was wrong is when their utility providers would contact them stating their account had become delinquent.
Deputies say this in turn, prompted victims to contact their financial institutions who then gave them copies of the cashed checks that had been altered and made out to others out of state.
They urged residents to use U.S. Postal Service collection boxes or electronic payment.
