KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Western Michigan University hosting upwards of 750 local middle and high schoolers for the 2023 regional Science Olympiad tournament on Saturday.
Hosted by WMU’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the tournament welcomed students from Allegan, Barry, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Hillsdale, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, and Van Buren Counties.
University officials say the students participated in their choice of 46 events that covered a variety of STEM topics. Those events, which were 50% developed and ran by students from WMU’s registered student organizations, ranged from experimental design and solar systems to cell biology, chemistry, astronomy, and more.
Students at Saturday’s regional tournament worked to qualify for the Science Olympiad state finals, which are scheduled to be held at Michigan State University on Saturday, April 22.
According to university officials, WMU is set to host the state Science Olympiad tournament in 2024.
