LANSING, MI (WJXQ) – Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist says he will not run for the U.S. Senate in 2024. But Michigan Representative Elissa Slotkin is putting her name in the race to replace retiring Senator Debbie Stabenow.
Slotkin is the first Democrat to declare a bid for the seat and she did so with a campaign launch video on her YouTube page Monday morning. In the video, Slotkin talks about growing up in Michigan, starting to work in public service after 9-11 and eventually working for the CIA.
The Michigan Democrat said America needs a new generation of leaders that think differently, work harder and never forgets the fact that they are a public servant. Stabenow has served in the Senate since being elected in 2001.
Republicans Nikki Snyder and Michael Hoover have already announced they will run for the Senate seat.
