MARSHALL, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Ford Motor Company is reportedly nearing a deal with Marshall area leaders to build a multibillion-dollar battery plant for its electric vehicles.
The Detroit News says that came from an elected Calhoun County official who does not have authorization to disclose details of the talks.
Ford would partner with Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited of China to make the lithium ion phosphate batteries. The factory would create 2,500 high-paying jobs at what’s been called the “Marshall Megasite”
Ford and CATL, the world’s largest electric vehicle battery producer in the world, teamed up to search for a North American production facility in June 2022.
The proposed plant could end up in Marshall after Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin blocked a plan for the production plant in January, due to CATL’s apparent ties to the Chinese Communist Party.
The Marshall Area Economic Development Alliance has purchased more than 700 acres and plans to purchase another 400 acres for the nearly 2,000 acre site located near I-94 and 1-69 in Marshall Township.
