ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 13, 2023) – Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., and the Allegan County Health Department (ACHD) is encouraging residents to learn more about how they can reduce their risk of radon exposure. ACHD is offering free radon test kits while they last to residents as part of National Radon Action Month.
Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless, and tasteless gas that is released harmlessly from the ground into the outdoor air. However, it can build up and reach harmful levels when trapped indoors in homes and buildings.
Ways to protect yourself and your family include:
- Obtain a radon test kit and test your current home
- Fix your home if radon levels are high
- When buying a new home, have it tested for radon
Radon test kits are available at ACHD through Michigan’s Indoor Radon Program. Radon test kits can also be found at local hardware stores, home improvement centers, and other retail stores, or you can purchase them online directly from the manufacturer at www.mi.radon.com. If you feel you might have had prolonged exposure to radon, talk with your doctor about screening for lung cancer. Pick up a free radon test kit for your home at ACHD, 3255 122nd Ave., Suite 200, Allegan during normal business hours, or call (269) 673-5411 for more information.
