KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The WMU Board of Trustees has voted to give Congressman Fred Upton, who will be retiring in a few weeks, an honorary degree. The board met on the matter at the university’s Bernhard Center on Thursday.
WMU President Edward Montgomery says they have worked him many times on a variety of projects, calling him a friend of the University.
Most recently, Upton requested and secured a $1.5 million grant for WMU’s STEM Collaboratory Workforce program to offer cutting edge approaches to diversify and expand STEM workforce pipelines. The Republican from St. Joseph, who has represented south west Michigan in the US House for 18-terms, decided not to run for a 19th time.
