GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 29, 2022) – A 37-year-old Holland man faces three decades in a federal prison.
US District Court Judge Jane Beckering handed down such a sentence to Jonathon Thomas Burgett on Tuesday following a conviction on sexual exploitation of a child charges. According to the US Attorney for the Western District of Michigan’s office, Burgett was caught taking photographs through an adult woman’s window in Allegan County, and hundreds of images of child pornography, including images of a four-year-old, were captured on his smartphone. The sentence not only reflected the severity of these charges, but a long history of similar offenses, according to Judge Beckering in her remarks.
Burgett’s arrest and subsequent conviction was part of the nationwide Project Safe Childhood initiative aimed at locating, apprehending and prosecuting those accused of exploiting children. The case was investigated by the FBI’s West Michigan Based Child Exploitation Task Force, in conjunction with the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department.
Sheriff Frank Baker talked about that involvement during a Thursday appearance on “WHTC Talk of the Town.”
