LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Michigan Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer held off a challenge from Republican Tudor Dixon in Tuesday’s general election.
Whitmer gained national attention during the COVID-19 pandemic and was the target of a kidnapping plot by men angry with her public health restrictions.
Polls were close in recent weeks but the Trump-endorsed Dixon could not make up the gap.
Democrat Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has beaten Republican Kristina Karamo for a second four-year term. At her victory speech in Detroit, she says “democracy has prevailed,” adding the right to vote was on the ballot. Benson says her work is not done and she will continue to protect elections in the state.
The race between Attorney General Dana Nessel and Republican challenger Matt DePerno remains too close for a projection. With 67-percent of the ballots counted, she had a three-percent lead of just over 100,000 votes.
Nessel offered brief remarks in Detroit a little after midnight, thanking family and staff. DePerno has challenged the 2020 presidential election results in Michigan.
