KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Former Western Michigan University hockey captain Paul Washe, accused of a rape in 2021, will not be heading to jail.
The news comes following his sentencing in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court on Friday, October 7.
The 23-year-old pleading guilty to a reduced charge in August. He was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with force or coercion connected to the December 21st sexual assault.
According to the plea agreement on August 23, the charges were dropped when Washe pleaded guilty to one count of seduction, which is a five year felony.
As a part of the deal, prosecutors agreed Washe could be sentenced under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act, a state law which allows convictions to be dismissed and sealed for first-time offenders between the ages of 18 and 26.
Washe’s accuser said that she was raped by the former hockey captain during an off-campus party.
Washe was suspended indefinitely from WMU’s hockey team in January, about two months before he was charged with sexual assault.
