IRVING, TX (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 28, 2022) – Daniel Romano is in some pretty good company.
The 5-11, 226-pound Hope College senior from Royal Oak Shrine is among 156 semifinalists in the running for 12 to 14 $18,000 post-graduate scholarships from the National Football Foundation in the William V. Campbell Trophy program. The trophy, in its 33rd year, recognizes an individal as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation through his combined success on the gridiron as well as in the classroom, along with “exemplary leadership.”
Romano rushed for 374 yards and five touchdowns last fall, good for a spot on the all-MIAA second team offense, and his 244-yard performance on October 23rd against Adrian earned him the league’s offensive player of the week and the D3Football national team of the week. This season, Romano has seen limited action in the Flying Dutchmen’s first four games. In the classroom, he is a three-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll recipient.
Other semifinalists from Michigan schools for this award include Robi Stuart of Central Michigan, Dylan Drummond of Eastern Michigan, Jake Moody of Michigan, Dylan Deatherage of Western Michigan, and Julius Wilkerson of Wayne State. The NFF Awards Committee of media members, College Football Hall of Famers and athletic administrators makes the selections.
The finalists will be announced on October 26th, with the trophy winner named on December 6th and receiving an extra $7,000 scholarship. WMU’s Zach Terrell in 2016 is the only Campbell Trophy winner from a Michigan school.
