Douglas Elmer Gibson (Doug), 77 years old, of Holland, MI passed away on September 17, 2022, at Heritage Nursing and Rehabilitation Community in Zeeland, MI.
Doug was born in Chicago, IL to Jayne and Elmer Gibson on February 10, 1945. His family later moved to Northbrook, IL where he attended elementary and high schools.
He earned degrees in History and Physical Education at Northern Illinois University. It was there he met his wife Janet (on a blind date) and they married on January 20, 1968, between semesters of their junior years.
After teaching for a couple of days, Doug decided that wasn’t for him and started his sales career in exercise equipment, scoreboards, and bleachers/grandstands. His passions evolved around baseball (Cubs), football (Bears), fishing (big lakes and small ones), and especially golf. His dream was to play at St. Andrews, which he was able to do!
Doug is survived by his loving wife Janet (Jan), of 54 years; his sons, Eric (Lorri), Andy (Niki), and his grandchildren Rylee, Kayla, Kyle (Eric), and Abby and Declan (Andy). His siblings include Alice Gibson, Gordy Gibson, Nancy Gibson, Carol Miller (Bob), Gary Gibson (Mary), plus many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents (Jayne & Elmer Gibson), in-laws (Clarence and Betty Schrader), daughter Laurie, sister Linnea (Paul), nephew Casey, and sister-in-law Michele.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 24, at 2 pm. at Zion Lutheran Church in Holland with Reverend Ryan Winningham officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, September 23, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Dykstra Funeral Home – Mulder Chapel. No cemetery burial is planned.
Memorial donations may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, Hospice of Holland, or the American Heart Association. The family wishes to thank Holland Hospital Telemetry Unit, The Cancer and Hematology Center of Holland, Hospice of Holland, and Heritage Nursing and Rehabilitation Community for their care and support during Doug’s journey. Many thanks to all of the friends and family who have supported Doug, especially during the last few months.
