KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Severe thunderstorms ripping through West Michigan Monday afternoon, August 29, following warm and muggy air that was prevalent earlier in the day.
The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids issuing a severe thunderstorm warning at 3:40 p.m. for Allegan, Barry, Calhoun, Kent, Kalamazoo, Ottawa, and Van Buren Counties warning of heavy winds, rain, hail, and possible damage to trees, structures, and power lines.
Local airports reporting strong wind gusts of up to 66 miles per hour at Tulip City Airport in Holland, 58 at Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, and 58 miles per hour at Battle Creek Executive Airport in Calhoun County. Wind speeds reached 53 miles per hour at Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport.
Around 66,000 Consumers Energy Customers were without electricity once all was said and done around 4:20 p.m. with police reporting several electric poles and wires down, with tree damage as well.
Consumers Energy is also reminding the public again of these safety tips as crews work to clean up damage and restore power:
- Stay at least 25 feet away from downed wires, keep children or pets away, and report the issue by calling 9-1-1 and Consumers Energy at 800-477-5050. Consumers Energy asks the public to keep at least six feet of distance from its crews.
- A portable generator should be placed at least 25 feet away from any doors, windows or fresh air intakes. Never operate a generator inside your home, garage, basement or enclosed area. Proper ventilation is critical.
- Be alert to crews working along roads. Drivers should slow down or stop and wait for oncoming traffic to clear so they safely can go past workers on roadsides.
