SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Two people are dead after a plane crash in South Haven Tuesday morning, August 2.
The South Haven Police Department says the plane, an Aerospace 600, crashed just minutes after takeoff from South Haven Regional Airport for a training flight.
According to investigators, the twin engine aircraft was found about one mile from the airport Wednesday morning.
Two men were on board, a 70-year-old from Wayland and a 70-year-old from Lawton, when the plane went down.
According to the families of the two victims, both men were experienced pilots and instructors.
The FAA out of Chicago notified South Haven police of a missing/unaccounted for aircraft which was found near the airport by the Michigan State Police Aviation Unit with both occupants found in the wreckage and deceased.
Authorities say one of the pilots was acting in the role of instructor to certify the other pilot who had recently purchased the plane.
South Haven police were aided by multiple departments during the search to include the FAA, Michigan State Police, Van Buren and Allegan County Sheriff’s Department, and the U.S. Air Force.
The investigation has been turned over to the NTSB.
