KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Severe storms knocking out power for more than 65,000 Consumers Energy customers over the weekend.
Those storms moved through parts of West Michigan Saturday night with those in Ionia, Kent, Muskegon, and Ottawa Counties suffering the most widespread outages with some extending farther south as well.
Storm damage was seen in the city of Kalamazoo as well with downed power across East Kalamazoo Avenue and Porter Street, near Bells/Old Dog Tavern.
According to Meteorologists, storms initially developed in Wisconsin before quickly moving east across open waters of Lake Michigan, with Muskegon and Ottawa counties being the first locations to see the thunderstorms just after 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 23.
Locally in Portage, city officials canceled the Portage Sunday Farmers Market for July 24 out of an abundance of caution due to inclement weather conditions and lightning that were in the forecast.
The event was canceled for the safety of both vendors and patrons.
The market is set to re-open on Sunday, July 31 at 9 a.m.
