DETROIT, MI (WKZO-AM/FM) – Detroit dropped the opener of their weekend series against Kansas City 3-1 at Comerica Park. The Royals scored a run in the third and added back-to-back solo homers in the fourth, all off starter and losing pitcher Michael Pineda. The Tigers’ lone run came on an Eric Haase sacrifice fly that brought home Jeimer Candelario in the ninth.
Detroit remains a game ahead of KC in the American League Central basement. This afternoon’s pitching match will feature Beau Briske for the Tigers against the Royals’ Kris Bubic.
Tigers owner Chris Ilitch thinks the team is making progress. He told reporters yesterday the Tigers started slow but a lot of youngers players are starting to develop. Ilitch is encouraging fans to stay patient even though he knows there’s pressure and temptation to rush things. He also gave GM Al Avila a vote of confidence.
