KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — One person is dead after an accident at the Battle Creek Field of Flight Air Show on Saturday afternoon, July 2.
The Battle Creek Police Department said it happened around 1:10 p.m. during the pyrotechnic portion of the show.
According to FOX-17 who was on scene when it happened, the death involved a jet truck which is part of Darnell Racing Enterprises. The truck itself exploded during a race between two planes while it was traveling up to 300 mile per hour, according to a witness.
The rest of the Field of Flight Air Show was canceled for the remainder of Saturday out of respect for the accident, while emergency crews responded to the scene.
The airspace around the airport was closed with the rest of Saturday’s and Sunday’s planned events still taking place as scheduled.
The Battle Creek Fire Department, Battle Creek Police Department, and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.
