Nathaniel Lowe doubled in a run in the 10th inning to start a four-run uprising Saturday afternoon as the Texas Rangers defeated the Chicago White Sox 11-9 on Chicago’s South Side.
Lowe’s big hit in the 10th was his second double of the game and helped make a winner out of reliever Matt Moore, the fifth of six pitchers for the Rangers. Moore (3-0) struck out five in two perfect innings.
Texas added runs in the 10th on a passed ball by Chicago catcher Reese McGuire and a two-run bases-loaded single by Marcus Semien. The Rangers also got a three-run homer from Adolis Garcia earlier as they overcame a 5-0 White Sox lead.
The White Sox scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the 10th off Texas closer Joe Barlow on an RBI single by Danny Mendick and a sacrifice fly from Andrew Vaughn. Barlow got Luis Robert — the tying run at the plate — to pop out to end the game.
Matt Foster (1-1) took the loss after he did not retire a batter in the 10th, allowing four runs on three hits and a walk.
Giants 3, Dodgers 2
Thairo Estrada homered as San Francisco escaped two bases-loaded jams in the late innings and held on for a win over visiting Los Angeles.
San Francisco moved ahead 3-1 with an insurance run in the eighth before the Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman hit a leadoff homer in the ninth against Jose Alvarez. With two runners on and two outs, Alvarez notched his first save of the season after Cody Bellinger grounded out to second base to end the game.
Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw (4-1) returned from the injured list and allowed two runs on three hits over four innings. He had two walks and four strikeouts while throwing 71 pitches in his first start since May 7.
Yankees 8, Cubs 0
Aaron Judge homered twice as surging New York slugged its way past Chicago at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees set a season high with six homers, raising their MLB-leading total to 94. New York also won for the 10th time in 11 games and improved to 43-16.
Judge hit his second career leadoff homer when he lined a 1-0 fastball from Chicago rookie Matt Swarmer (1-1) into the left field seats. He then hit his MLB-best 24th homer in the fifth. Giancarlo Stanton hit his 13th homer in the fourth. Gleyber Torres also homered for the second straight night.
Twins 6, Rays 5
Luis Arraez hit a grand slam and had three hits, and Jorge Polanco reached base three times and drove in what proved to be the winning run as Minnesota rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to win at home.
It was the 12th multi-hit contest in the last 20 games for Arraez, who leads the majors with a .367 average. The Twins beat Tampa Bay for the fourth time in a row. Trevor Megill (2-1) picked up the win in relief while Emilio Pagan pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to garner his eighth save.
Shane Baz (0-1), the Rays’ No. 1 rated prospect who was making his 2022 debut following arthroscopic right elbow surgery in March, retired the first six batters he faced but departed after six straight batters reached base in the third inning, including Arraez’s grand slam.
Athletics 10, Guardians 5
Seth Brown hit a grand slam to help rally Oakland in the seventh and snap a 10-game losing streak with a victory over host Cleveland.
Frankie Montas (3-6) pitched six innings to earn the win. Brown recorded his first career hit with the bases loaded after being 0-for-10.
Guardians reliever Eli Morgan (2-2) thought he had struck out Brown on an inside pitch but didn’t get the call from home plate umpire Jeremie Rehak. Brown deposited Morgan’s next pitch 408 feet into the right-field stands for a grand slam, giving the A’s a 7-5 lead.
Cardinals 5, Reds 4
Tommy Edman hit a walk-off two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning to lift St. Louis over visiting Cincinnati.
Starting pitcher Adam Wainwright allowed three runs on eight hits in seven innings for the Cardinals, who have won two straight after losing their previous three contests.
Paul Goldschmidt went 0-for-4 for the Cardinals as his 46-game on-base streak came to an end.
Phillies 4, Diamondbacks 0
Zack Wheeler scattered two hits over six innings as host Philadelphia defeated Arizona for its ninth win in a row.
Bryson Stott belted a two-run shot in the second inning for his fourth home run in the last eight games. Nick Castellanos had an RBI single in the first inning and an RBI double in the eighth for the Phillies, who improved to 8-0 under interim manager Rob Thomson.
Diamondbacks starter Madison Bumgarner allowed three runs, one of which was earned, on six hits in five innings, slipping to 0-5 in his last six outings. Philadelphia (30-29) moved over .500 for the first time since it was 3-2 on April 12.
Braves 10, Pirates 4
Ozzie Albies’ grand slam capped an eight-run outburst and sparked Atlanta to a win over visiting Pittsburgh, extending its winning streak to 10 games.
The Braves trailed 4-2 entering the bottom of the seventh when the comeback began. Michael Harris II singled home the first run, and Dansby Swanson’s three-RBI bloop single to right put Atlanta ahead for the first time.
Atlanta loaded the bases and Albies hit his eighth homer into the right-field stands. It was the fifth grand slam of his career.
Orioles 6, Royals 4
Tyler Nevin hit a three-run home run and Adley Rutschman added two doubles to lead visiting Baltimore to a victory over Kansas City.
Tyler Wells (3-4) earned the win, allowing three runs on five hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out four. Jorge Lopez earned his eighth save in 10 chances.
Daniel Lynch (2-6) allowed four runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings and was pegged with his fifth successive defeat. He walked one and struck out seven, tying a career high.
Nationals 8, Brewers 6
Juan Soto, Nelson Cruz and Josh Bell hit back-to-back-to-back home runs to help Washington defeat visiting Milwaukee.
The Brewers suffered their eighth consecutive defeat despite blasting three home runs. Leadoff batter Christian Yelich homered on the fifth pitch of the game, Mark Mathias hit a two-run shot in the seventh inning, and Luis Urias added a two-run blast with two outs in the ninth.
Milwaukee scored three runs in the seventh and then loaded the bases with two outs before Rowdy Tellez lined out to first base off Kyle Finnegan, who was the second of three relievers used by the Nationals. Tanner Rainey pitched the ninth, giving up a walk and Urias’ homer.
Tigers 3, Blue Jays 1
Beau Brieske collected his first major league victory in his ninth start as host Detroit topped Toronto.
Brieske (1-5) gave up seven hits and didn’t issue a walk in 5 2/3 innings. Gregory Soto notched his 13th save while surviving a ninth-inning jam.
Toronto catcher Gabriel Moreno, called up from Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday, went 1-for-4 in his major league debut. Moreno is considered the team’s top prospect. George Springer ended Detroit’s shutout bid with a two-out single in the ninth.
Marlins 5, Astros 1
Braxton Garrett pitched effectively into the sixth inning and visiting Miami parlayed a three-run second inning to an interleague victory over Houston.
Garrett (1-1) surrendered a baserunner in each of his innings yet kept the scuffling Astros lineup in check, allowing one unearned run on six hits and one walk with five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. Jon Berti had two RBIs for the Marlins, who won their fifth straight game.
After finishing 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position and stranding 11 runners in the series opener, the Astros stranded nine and went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position. They had loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh, but Michael Brantley struck out before Alex Bregman lined into a double play, ending any chance of a rally.
Padres 2, Rockies 1 (Game 1, 10 innings)
Ghost runner Manny Machado scored from second on a wild pitch and a throwing error by Colorado catcher Elias Diaz with two out in the 10th inning to give host San Diego a walk-off win in the first game of a day/night doubleheader.
Machado opened the 10th at second and was still there after Rockies reliever Carlos Estevez recorded two outs. But as his first pitch to Jose Azocar bounced away from Diaz, Machado made a late break for third. The catcher’s throw to third sailed down the line, allowing Machado to score for the Padres’ fifth walk-off win of the season.
Right-hander Steven Wilson (4-1), the fourth reliever used by the Padres, retired the Rockies in order in the top of the 10th to earn the win. Estevez (1-4) took the loss. The Padres are 7-3 in extra-inning games.
