PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Pfizer plans a relatively quick turnaround on their plans to begin making Paxlovid, one of their newer Covid-19 treatments, in Kalamazoo County.
The FDA has issued an Emergency Use Authorization for the treatment, restricted to use by Covid-19 sufferers who could be at higher risk of hospitalization or death.
The announcement of a new $120-million dollar facility was made on Monday, but Pfizer ‘s Mike McDermott says production has already begun at one of their existing pill production lines in Portage.
He tells us they already have the space for the new pill line, they just have to install the equipment to expand production.
McDermott says another goal is to win final FDA approval…and not just for high risk patients.
Meanwhile production continues in another section of the plant on their groundbreaking vaccine, a drug that may become as common as annual flu shots to keep Covid-19 under control.
